Sprite Workflow

Description

A quick look at making some sprites.
This shows how I make a sprite from a Reference Image.
Work done in MS Paint, it can be done in Photoshop, but i prefer the feel of MS Paint when doing sprite work.
Remember not to save the Image as a JPEG, it will compress the file and mess up your solid colors.

1: Picking an Image

An image of Sheeva from MK3, the image
I took from GiantBomb.com

2: Scaling down the Image

Scale down the image to a height u feel ok with. I use Street fighter Alpha sprites as a reference for height.
This one I scaled Sheeva's top arm to about the height of Chun-li's head.

3: Outlines and Shades

Outline the character in a color that doesn't exist in the image already.
Then using 3 colors for the shading of the character, filling over the existing image, I used Yellow,Orange and Red for brightest to darkest.

4: Colors

Pick your colors, having a sheet of colors each with 5 shades is useful at this point.
In paint, set ur main color to the yellow used for the brightest area of shading, and then ur alt color to ur brightest skin tone.
Now using the eraser tool, holding right click and moving over the image will replace all the yellow area with the skin tone.
Use this process for all the shades and use the Darkest color to replace the green outline.

5: Outline touch ups

It may be hard to see from the image above, but I use the 4th color of my pallet on the top part of most of the outlines, normal just the top 2 or 3 dots.
but don't always follow this rule 100%, decide were the right places are to use it, zooming to just under Sheevas breasts you will see that i did not keep the lighter color going all the way up to convey that they don't run into each other.

6: Rap-up

All that's really left to do is changing colors for the different sections.
I tend to find faces and hands are the hardest part of the sprite, using other sprite faces as a ref is always helpful.

Good old Paint... I used to play with that program since I was a little kid; still use it on occasion...
